Anti-hate signs spring up around the midstate

(Harrisburg) — Pennsylvania is home to 40 hate groups, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center–and at least five of them are based in the midstate.
Now, signs springing up around the region aim to curb hate.
The blue signs read “hate has no home here” in six languages. Started by a group of neighbors in Chicago, the signs have been popping up in urban areas like Harrisburg and are now spreading to rural areas.
Tom Spangler heads the Snyder County Democratic Committee. He said they bought a bulk order of the yard stakes at the suggestion of a member.
“It fits in with Democratic Party values, but I think the whole thing is bigger than that–the whole outreach that this has caused,” Spangler said.
He said the committee has sold about 35 signs in the past month to people “of all parties” in Snyder, Union, Northumberland, and Juniata counties.
Spangler said he hopes the signs will combat messages of hate, such as swastikas that were found late last year on the Susquehanna University and Bucknell University campuses.
A swastika was also drawn on a locker at the Susquehanna Valley Country Club in September.
