(Harrisburg) — Just days after Lancaster County’s Extraordinary Give raised more than $8.6 million, York County is planning to launch its own day of charitable giving.

Give Local York organizer Meagan Feeser said people in the county have been watching the success of the Extraordinary Give and wondered, “why not us?”

“Not only are they raising millions of dollars, which is phenomenal,” Feeser said. “But the sense that you get of community pride and people working together and just being really excited to be part of their community is something that we really wanted to capture.”

She said the new event will try to create the same sense of community pride.

“Ultimately what we do create will be very York County-focused. We don’t necessarily know what that looks like yet and that’s really exciting,” Feeser said.

Give Local York is slated to take place on May 4th, 2018.

It falls on a First Friday, so people will be able to donate in-person at events around York City or online.

It is also scheduled in conjunction with Give Local America events across the country.

Nonprofits that want to participate will have to pay a $150 application fee, which will be used to run the event’s website.

Feeser said organizers are working to create a scholarship program so that fee doesn’t create a barrier to participation.

The goal for the inaugural event is to raise $1 million for 200 community nonprofits.

Lancaster County’s first year of the Extraordinary Give raised $1.67 million for a similar number of nonprofits.
