Friday, May 11, 2018
Derry Presbyterian Church, Hershey, PA

Saturday, May 12, 2018
High Center, Messiah College, Mechanicsburg

This concert celebrates the roots – spiritual, relational, musical – that give us wings; the experiences that provide the stability we need to dream, take risks, to soar!

The program opens with songs celebrating our faith and musical roots. Among them are Faure’s Cantique de Jean Racine, American spirituals, and the perfect melding of the concept of “roots and wings” with Rhonda Sandberg’s modern arrangement of Bach’s Come, Sweet Death.

The modern lullaby Jenny Rebecca, Bob Chilcott’s setting of Christina Rosetti’s poem “Remember Me,” and Eriks Esenvald’s stunning setting of Sara Teasdale’s “Only in Sleep” all speak movingly of the experience of looking back at our earliest or most important passages.

Songs from early America conclude the program, among them old American folk songs and Shawn Kirchner’s arrangement of the 19th-century hymn Angel Band, which movingly combines the threads of faith, relational, and musical roots.

Deadline to enter is midnight,
April 26, 2018.
