Food Bank calling on public during Hunger Action Month

(Harrisburg) — About one in seven people in central Pennsylvania are struggling with hunger. Now the region’s main food bank plans to use Hunger Action Month to raise awareness.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank needs one million pounds of food each week to serve families in need in the region. It hopes to engage people throughout the month, ahead of the busy holiday season.

Executive Director Joe Arthur says the food bank needs financial donations as well as volunteers to collect and distribute food to fulfill its mission.

He adds a new way for people to donate will be unveiled this month.

“We are rolling out something called a virtual food drive onto our website. You can actually donate online and it looks like a little grocery store,” Arthur said. 

The food bank is planning a number of events this month. It will also honor “Hunger Heroes” such as the Department of Agriculture and stand-out volunteers at a Hunger Action Breakfast in Harrisburg on the 14th.
