York Mayor Kim Bracey signs marijuana decriminalization bill

(York) — York Mayor Kim Bracey on Tuesday signed legislation making possession of small amounts of marijuana or smoking it in a public place a civil offense rather than a crime.
The action comes after City Council on July 18 passed a bill decriminalizing marijuana by a 4-1 vote.
The new law doesn’t make possessing or smoking marijuana legal.
But instead of facing possible jail time and getting a criminal conviction on their record, violators will face a fine or community service.
York joins Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Harrisburg as among the cities in Pennsylvania that have decriminalized marijuana possession.
By a 4-1 vote, City Council approved a bill introduced by Councilwoman Judy Ritter-Dickson subjecting those possessing less than 30 grams of marijuana to a civil fine or community service and not criminal prosecution and possible jail time. GARY HABER
