Lancaster County SPCA going out of business

(Lancaster) — The Lancaster County SPCA is going out of business due to a failed business model and lack of funds, the shelter said in a news release Tuesday morning.

Today is the last day the open-admission shelter will accept owner-surrendered pets and stray cats, according to the release. After that, the shelter will operate in a limited capacity as an animal control facility and will only accept stray dogs brought in by police officers.

The shelter will likely cease all operations in mid-to-late August, but an exact date has not yet been established, the release states. In the meantime, the shelter will cease operations in stages over the next few weeks to allow time for the City of Lancaster and contracted municipalities to find other arrangements to meet stray dog housing requirements.

In an effort to find homes for animals currently at the shelter, adoption fees have been reduced to $100 for dogs and are free for all other animals, according to the release. Those who wish to adopt an animal will still have to complete the adoption process.

The City of Lancaster owns the Mary K. Dano Animal Shelter facility, out of which LCSPCA operates, and is seeking another organization to move into the facility.
