(Harrisburg) — A former researcher at Penn State Hershey Medical Center has pleaded guilty to lying about diagnostic tests for cancer patients.

US Attorney Bruce Brandler says in 2013 and 2014, Floyd Benko of Palmyra, Lebanon County performed gene mutation tests for 124 advanced stage cancer patients, in order to get them the best possible treatment.

But Brandler says the 62-year-old didn’t follow Hershey’s standard operating procedure, admitted to lying to administrators, and concealed his methods.

Hershey Medical paid nearly $70,000 for new tests that showed about half of the original results weren’t correct.

Benko has agreed to pay back the test costs, and faces a sentence of up to five years in prison.
