Barn raising in Lancaster County set for historic Star Barn this weekend

(Harrisburg) — A different kind of celebration is set to take place in Lancaster County over the holiday weekend.
Instead of the usual red, white and blue Fourth of July, a company plans to raise an historic barn that dates to the 1870s.
The Star Barn Raising Festival starts on Sunday, and runs through the 4th.
It’s the first big step in putting the structure back together, after it was moved from its home along Route 283 in Dauphin County to Elizabethtown, Lancaster County.
DAS Companies, which purchased the barn in 2014, is hosting the festival.
Project Manager Mike Kleinhans says people will be able to make wooden pegs, put their name on them, and make them a part of the barn’s frame.
“Now, we’re not going to allow people to climb up 50 feet in the air. But other than that, you’re going to be able to do what they do when they build the barns for the Amish community. I don’t know that I’ve seen a whole lot of that around here that you could actually take part of,” says Kleinhans.
Kleinhans says barn-raising sessions are set for the mornings and afternoons of all three days of the festival.
“We’re building everything beam by beam, stick by stick, level by level, just as it was when it was sitting up along 283. You really won’t see much of a difference if you’ve ever been in the barn,” he adds.
The Star Barn’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
