Fees for state police protection being considered

(Harrisburg) — Governor Tom Wolf has proposed a $25 per capita fee on municipalities that rely solely on the State Police for local law enforcement, but one state lawmaker wants to push that a little further.
The bill from Democratic Representative Mike Sturla would phase in a maximum 110-dollar per capita fee over a ten year period.
Sturla says this is a bargain for municipalities because the State Police estimates it costs them $234 per person to provide services to areas without local police.
Sturla says the measure could raise $2 billion for the State Police over the next decade, which the agency will need, because its funding stream from the state motor license fund will be capped in the next few years.
“Eighty percent of us are missing out on road funds because twenty percent want to take home a WAM for free police,” he said.
Sturla says a stop to the Motor License Fund raid translates to more than 1300 miles of roadway improvements.
