US House set to vote on GOP health care overhaul Thursday

(Harrisburg) — The Republican proposal to overhaul the health insurance system would force older people with modest incomes to pay more for health insurance, but could cut costs for younger Americans.

Congress is set to vote on the bill later this week.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates that in the coming years, 24 million people would go without insurance coverage under the American Health Care Act.

As for health care costs, younger people who buy on healthcare.gov would likely pay less in insurance premiums.

But for older people making less than $50,000, they could have to pay thousand of dollars more every year.

Charlotte Kitler, helps people in Luzerne County get covered, and was stunned at the projected costs for a 64 year old.

“Hold on to your hats, $14,000. $14,000 for a person that makes only about $26,000, how can that person possibly afford to pay for that?” says Kitler.

Kitler spoke on a conference call set up by Senator Bob Casey’s office, who calls the Republican bill a scheme to take health care away from people.

“I’m afraid, unfortunately, that those concerns can only increase with this proposed legislation, the American Health Care Act, because it is going to hit seniors very hard,” she adds.

The US House is set to vote on the bill this Thursday .
