Thr 1400 block of South 14th Street is closed to cars because of the sinkholes that have opened up.

(Harrisburg) — The state is sending money to Harrisburg after sinkholes opened up on a block of South 14th street in the city.

Federal money has also been promised to help buy 50-plus properties.

Houses on the block have visible cracks in their foundations, floors that residents say aren’t sturdy, and in some cases, front doors that are jammed shut by the shifting ground.

The Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and state Department of Community and Economic Development says the latest round of grants top $3 million for the block.

In total, the state is awarding more than $8 million for projects to buy houses in Pennsylvania that pose a safety risk.
