Hundreds in midstate to participate in MLK Day of Service

(Harrisburg) — For many, today is a day off from work, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
But hundreds of people are expected to come together to make it a day full of volunteering.
There are projects all over the midstate, as part of the MLK Day of Service.
One project in York is set up to visit residents in a nursing home and keep them company for the day.
At Lancaster County’s YMCA, they have a deep cleaning planned all day.
In the Harrisburg area, volunteers will be cleaning out stalls that one nonprofit uses for keep their therapy horse.
Eileen Jacobs-Crummel, one of the oragnizers of the Harrisburg events, says there’s a bigger purpose behind the day.
“I was raised in Harrisburg, I went to school in Harrisburg. It’s just a way of giving back, and honoring Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy and his dream,” she says.
Jacobs-Crummel says for nonprofits that always need more help than they have, the MLK Day of Service is a boost.
“Having people come in and still contributing and helping on that day just gives them a positive feeling that somebody was out there to still help on their day off,” she adds.
Projects are running all day in the midstate.
