In this May 2, 2016 photo, a sign hangs at an entrance to Holtwood Picnic & Recreation area in Holtwood, Pa. Talen Energy, the park’s owner, abruptly closed the popular park, which includes trailhead access to a renowned hiking trail, outraging residents and hikers.
(Lancaster) — An energy company is donating 185 acres of open space in Lancaster County.
Talen Energy turned over the property to the Lancaster County Conservancy, saying it’s part of its effort to preserve landscape in the region.
The donated land includes two areas that Talen closed in April, generating controversy: Holtwood Park and an access trail for Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve.
Parts were reopened in July, and Talen says the donation makes trail access permanent.
But questions remain about who will take on the responsibility of maintaining the land and the park, which is still closed because of concerns about public safety.
