PA farmers surveyed about conservation efforts for the bay

(Harrisburg) — Farmers in Pennsylvania who participated in a Penn State survey regarding their conservation practices may soon be asked for additional information.

The survey by the Penn State Agriculture and Environment Center focuses on farmers in the Susquehanna River Watershed, many of whom took voluntary action to reduce runoff into waterways which flow into the Susquehanna, and eventually into the Chesapeake Bay.

Center Director Matt Royer says they want to make sure those conservation practices are being documented.

“This is an effort to collect that data and get fuller credit for what farmers have done on the ground to improve water quality in the bay region,” he said.

The information will be passed on to the Department of Environmental Protection as part of Pennsylvania’s compliance with bay cleanup agreements.

The survey is taking place through early September.
