Hot, humid weather expected to strain electric providers

(Harrisburg) — Electric providers are anticipating a strain on the power grid over this stretch of hot weather.
Pennsylvania’s utility regulator is encouraging residents to help out by conserving energy.
The Public Utility Commission says residents who cut back on energy use over the next few days will stay cooler and reduce the burden on their air conditioning systems.
PUC Spokesman Nils Hagen-Frederiksen says Pennsylvanians can conserve energy and money by raising the temperature on their thermostat while they are out of the house.
“For every degree up or down that you change your thermostat, depending on the age of your system and other factors, you could change your consumption by up to three percent,” he said.
Other conservation methods can be as simple as closing your blinds to keep rooms shaded and cooler and postponing the use of heat-generating appliances like dryers and dishwashers until later in the evening.
