(Harrisburg) — A bill to place enforcement cameras in highway work zones has passed the state Senate Appropriations Committee.

The legislation would allow for cameras to be set up in highway work zones on a trial period, which would last five years.

State Senator Judy Schwank is co-sponsor of the bill.

“Senate Bill 840 is a bill that will help to insure that our highway workers are a lot safer and less prone to hit or to being injured by traffic,” she said.

PennDOT would operate and administer the cameras, which would be used to photograph speeders.

A fine of $100 would be levied against any vehicle going 11 mph over the posted work zone speed limit.

No points would be assessed against a driver’s record.

Statistics from 2013 show there were 1800 crashes in work zones, including 16 deaths.
