Blood, bullets, drugs among items found at homicide scene

(Greencastle) — Police found at least eight shell casings or bullets inside a barn where three people were fatally shot last weekend on a Welsh Run Road property.

Those along with various types of drugs and drug paraphernalia, money and blood samples were among the more than 70 items recovered during searches at the scene, according to court documents.

Wendy Chaney, 39, Phillip Jackson, 36, and Brandon Cole, 47, were killed as a result of the shooting at the property late Saturday night, with Chaney and Cole found bound and dead in a barn, according to court documents. Jackson was still alive when troopers arrived, but died as a result of his injuries at York Hospital later.

PSP Chambersburg Lt. Gary Carter said Wednesday the autopsies have been done but they are waiting on final results.

The barn was the site of most of the items recovered by police, including the bullets and shell casings as well as black tip ties and various blood samples.

According to court documents, suspected heroin, marijuana and pills, as well as a plastic bag containing 17 small plastic baggies, were among items recovered. The suspected heroin and suspected marijuana were in plastic baggies by the barn. Police also found found $20 bills, a $100 bill and a $50 bill near the barn.

Specifically from the barn, police recorded finding blood on a chair which they took a sample of, several .22 caliber fired casings, a bullet jacket, a .22 caliber long magnum shell casing, a pink arrow, a .22 caliber short fired casing, a Broad Head crossbow bolt, a prescription pill bottle, plastic gas cans, black powder container, a handwritten note in an ammo can, a white fitted sheet and blood on a pool table.

DNA was taken from Chaney and Cole, as was gunshot residue kits, clothing and black zip ties. There was a bag containing suspected drugs recovered from Cole.

Police also searched four vehicles on the property.

In a Ford Focus, police found a thumb drive, a bottle of Furosemide – a type of water pill, and a glass pipe. A wooden baseball bat was found in a Ford F150.

In a Toyota Corolla, police found two cell phones, a paper with miscellaneous names and numbers, and a Morton Hunter Express SL Crossbow.  DNA was also collected from the vehicle.

More marijuana was found in a cup holder in a Toyota Tundra at the scene, and DNA was taken from the vehicle.

In the front yard, police found latex gloves and a sliver pipe located in front of a nearby vehicle.

A three-page letter to victim Phillip Jackson was among the recovered items, along with an eviction notice from an unspecified “cottage to a “tennant (sic).”

A Thompson Center Arms .50 Flintlock rifle was recovered, but the warrant inventory list does not list where.

Police do not specify which of the items recovered will undergo forensic further forensic testing, or mark the level of significance to each item.

Carter could not give additional details on the case, but reiterated that he felt the people at the property were targeted and there is no immediate danger to the community.
