State House looking to make fundraising easier

(Harrisburg) — A bill that could make it easier for some volunteer organizations to fundraise is working its way through the state House.

Right now, if a nonprofit such as a volunteer fire department uses any outside help to fundraise, it has to submit a report to the Department of State, which could be subject to an expensive audit on that nonprofit’s dime.

The sponsor of the bill to change that, State Representative Dan Moul, says audits can cost a large organization thousands of dollars.

“And that is a lot of times that Dan has to get in the dunk tank and earn that back for that fire company.  So, I’m trying to keep myself out of the dunk tank,” he said.

Moul’s legislation would make it so that VFDs, veterans groups and rescue squads could use basic outside services to assist in fundraising, like having copies made, without losing their exemption to State Department reporting.
