Call for Reading to adopt municipal ID cards
(Reading) — A group that advocates for Latino communities in Pennsylvania plans to hold a press conference later today in support of a proposal to establish a municipal ID card in the city of Reading.
Make the Road PA says the program could generate close to $130,000 in net income to the cash-strapped city.
The locally-issued government IDs would be used for everything from opening a bank account to picking up a prescription.
Reading is the most recent Pennsylvania city to consider the service, which advocates say help immigrants, the elderly and people with disabilities access services.
According to WHYY, Pittsburgh has solicited bids for a feasibility study on its own municipal ID program, and Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney listed the cards as a part of his transition plan.
