Bill would help military families pursue a civilian teaching career
(Harrisburg) — When military members retire from the service, they and their spouses can face a few hurdles to move into a civilian career.
There is now a bill in the state House of Representatives to remove one of those obstacles.
The bill would expedite teacher certification applications for military members, veterans, and their spouses.
It also reduces the application fee for this group from upwards of one hundred dollars to just ten dollars.
Teaching is at the top of the list of military spouses’ professions and Pennsylvania’s Adjutant General Anthony Carrelli says a number of veterans will use their GI Bill benefits to pursue a degree in teaching.
“Military members are uniquely qualified when it comes to teaching. They have trained junior and senior personnel throughout their careers. They possess a variety of transferable skills which we should want all of our classrooms to have,” Carrelli said.
Pennsylvania education officials say the bill will provide an asset to classrooms by bringing in the passion and commitment of U.S. service members.
