(Harrisburg) — Pennsylvania will play host to some big events this summer, such as the Democratic National Convention.  That will result in guests flocking to the state with some searching for hotel alternatives.

State insurance officials have some tips for those turning to home-sharing services.

The home sharing service Airbnb covers injuries and damages during a stay up to one million dollars, but there are exceptions.

Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Teresa Miller says if you’re thinking about renting out your home, it’s important to do some research into your insurance policies, so you’re not left holding the bill if something happens.

“Most homeowners policies do exclude a commercial activity because there may be holes in what the protection Airbnb provides.  That’s why I would really urge people to contact your insurance professional to make sure you are covered for the activity that you want to engage in,” Miller said.

People looking to rent a room through Airbnb should check their existing insurance to see if it covers anything while away from home. If not, Miller says travel insurance can be an affordable option.
