Rally draws attention to student debt

(York) — It’s graduation season, with thousands leaving school with bachelors, masters and doctorate degrees, not to mention a lot of debt.

An event this week at Penn State York sought to bring awareness to the issue of student debt and to propose solutions.

State Representative Kevin Schreiber, who served as host, said not enough people are aware of the seriousness of the issue.

“Pennsylvania ranks third nationally in student debt average per graduate at about $33,000 per graduate, which is higher than the national average.  That has a significant impact and it’s compounded and grown significantly over time,” he said.

Schreiber said proposed solutions vary and include increases in state and federal investment in higher education, and finding a way to decrease the average student loan interest rate of 7-percent.
