(Harrisburg) — Another primary election day has come and gone in Pennsylvania. So what happened?

WITF’s Tim Lambert talks with Dickinson College assistant political science professor Sarah Niebler about what happened in the state’s two biggest races.

Presidential race

Donald Trump comfortably won the Republican presidential primary, and said delegates had a “moral obligation” to support the person who won.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton cruised to victory, and thanked a handful of state politicians.

 

U.S. Senate

In a race that saw her surge in the final week, Katie McGinty won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate. She’ll face Republican incumbent Pat Toomey in November.

 

Congress

In the 9th district, which includes all of Franklin County, Republican incumbent Bill Shuster narrowly escaped with a win against challenger Art Halvorson.

As for Lancaster County and a portion of Berks County, state Senator Lloyd Smucker (R- Lancaster) has defeated Manheim businessman Chet Beiler in the Republican primary race for the 16^th District seat held by retiring Congressman Joe Pitts (R), who has held the office since 1997.

 

State Attorney General

Democrat Josh Shapiro and Republican John Rafferty will face one another in the November election for Pennsylvania attorney general, having won their respective primaries on Tuesday. Before the current Attorney General Kathleen Kane won the seat in 2012, no Democrat had been elected to the position in the commonwealth.

 

State Senate

Lancaster County Commissioner Scott Martin topped two candidates in the 13th District race. The seat became open when GOP Representative Lloyd Smucker ran for Congress.

In the 15th District, John Disanto narrowly beats Andrew Lewis in the Republican primary.

State Representative Mike Regan, R-Cumberland/York, beat three candidates in the Republican primary to succeed longtime state Sen. Pat Vance in the 31st District. There were no Democratic candidates on the ballot Tuesday, but Regan says the seat’s not a lock yet.

 

State House

In the 92nd District in York County, Republican Dawn Keefer defeated two candidates in the race to fill Mike Regan’s seat.

In the 101st District in Lebanon County, Republican Frank Ryan topped three opponents. The seat became open when GOP Representative Mauree Gingrich announcer her retirement.

In the 104th District in portions of Daupin and Lebanon counties, Republican Sue Helm earned a convincing win over Nathaniel Curtis to fill retiring GOP Representative John Payne’s seat.
