Susquehanna River fish-kill brings $26K fine

Brunner Island LLC paid a nearly $26,000 fine for equipment shut-off that killed more than 1,100 fish in January.

(Undated) — The controlling company of a coal-fired electric generating station on the Susquehanna River paid a nearly $26,000 fine after the facility caused the death of more than 1,100 fish in January, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection.

The fish died when during an equipment shutdown at the Brunner Island LLC-owned facility. During the incident on Jan. 30, the water temperature dropped 13 degrees in one hour.

In addition to the fine, Brunner Island installed equipment and the adopted new procedures for a quicker response in the future to ensure at least a partial heating of water being discharged.
