100th Pennsylvania Farm Show kicks off tomorrow

(Harrisburg) — The Pennsylvania Farm Show is about to reach a milestone: 100 years.
For many — the Farm Show is like Christmas in January.
From the agriculture competitions to the food court full of Pennsylvania products to yes, the milkshakes, hundreds of thousands of people flock to the show every year.
This year, mushrooms will be highlighted, with a, ahem, Schroom Room, and a special exhibit will show what it takes to get a product from farm to table.
State Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding says it’s all a part of helping people get to know their farmers.
He says when the Farm Show first started, more than 40 percent of Pennsylvanians worked in the agriculture industry.
“Think about what has happened in the last hundred farm shows. Today by the way, it’s about two percent, so that is an amazing transformation of Pennsylvania agriculture,” he adds.
Redding says the exhibit on the farm-to-table process will look at four products — apples, dairy, the pork industry, and potatoes.
He says, “We have a relationship with our doctors, our ministers, our elected leaders, but why not the same relationship with the folks who feed us three times a day? So we’re trying to get at this in the ‘Know your farmer, know your food’ display area.”
Admission to the event at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg, is free.
Parking is $15.
