(Jacksonville, FL) — Penn State quarterback Christian Hackenberg and defensive tackle Austin Johnson have announced they will forego their final year of eligibility to enter the NFL Draft.

“This place means a lot to me,” Hackenberg said. “It’s been an awesome ride, tough way to end it today. It means the world to me. My family and I talked about it and we felt this was the best decision for me. I felt my role here and my job here has been accomplished. Things are in good hands moving forward.”

Hackenberg leaves Penn State with his name etched at the top of the career passing record books.  He ranks first in at least six categories including completions, yardage and touchdown passes.

At 6′ 4″ and over 300 pounds, Johnson has been a force in the middle of the Penn State defensive line.  He finished with 78 tackles and 6.5 sacks this season and started every game in each of the last two seasons.

“I want to thank all of the coaches who have helped me throughout my college career,” Johnson said.  “I would like to thank Coach (Joe) Paterno and Coach (Larry) Johnson for opening the door for me to attend Penn State and thank you to Coach (Bill) O’Brien for being the rock of the program in a time of need.  I would also like to thank Coach (James) Franklin and Coach (Sean) Spencer for supporting me to excel in my position,” he said.

The announcements were expected and came following Penn State’s 24-17 loss to Georgia in theTaxSlayer Bowl on Saturday.
