Anti-crime legislation focuses on young people

(Harrisburg) — A state lawmaker is sponsoring a bill mandating an annual education course for high school students on the effects of drug and gun-related crimes in an effort to reduce acts of violence committed by young people.

The bill would direct the State Police and the Department of Education to develop the program. Bill sponsor, Senator John Wozniak, says it focuses on specific crimes most often committed by teens and young adults.

“The top ten, so to speak, of crimes committed by young people between ages 18 and 24, so that they have an idea of what the consequences are of these top ten crimes.  And it goes everywhere from armed robbery to stealing a car, and these are the punishments that you will receive.  I think being enlightened might just back you off from some of these dumb decisions that people tend to make,” he said.

Wozniak says political and educational leaders need to send a strong and consistent message that these behaviors can carry serious consequences.
