(Harrisburg) — PennDOT has announced a pilot program designed to keep track of its plow trucks during the winter season.

Technology known as Automated Vehicle Location, or AVL, will be installed in 700 plow trucks. Governor Tom Wolf says the system will allow PennDOT to see operations and conditions on the ground in real-time, resulting in more efficient use of equipment and materials.

“It’s good for taxpayers, it saves money, it makes government work better and more efficiently.  We are making lives, every day in different ways, better and better for the people of Pennsylvania and I think that’s a really important thing,” Wolf said.

According to PennDOT Secretary Leslie Richards, the AVL program is estimated to save the agency 1.4 million-dollars over the next 4 to 6 years. The information will also be made available to the public later this year through the online 511 PA system.
