State expands quarantine to stop spread of invasive insect

(Reading) — The state Department of Agriculture is expanding the quarantine of materials in Berks County, in an effort to stop the spread of an invasive insect.
The spotted lanternfly was first detected last fall, and has since led to quarantines in six townships and two boroughs.
Colebrooke Township is being added to the list.
Businesses that want to move materials that can spread the pest need a permit from the state.
Items restricted include firewood, brush or yard waste, construction materials, packing materials, grills and more.
Businesses without a permit could face fines up to $20,000.
The spotted lanternfly attacks grapes, apples, pines and stone fruits.
