(Harrisburg) — Pencils, notebooks and vaccinations. The Pennsylvania Department of Health is reminding parents to get their children the essentials before heading off to school this fall.
Officials with the Department of Health say up-to-date vaccinations are critically important for the safety of the state’s children and the population as a whole.
Secretary of Health Dr. Karen Murphy says their data shows 91 percent of school-aged children in the state have their measles vaccine.
“What’s important about that is in order to have what they call, herd immunity, and that is immunity to protect the population, herd immunity is about 95 percent. Our goal is to exceed herd immunity so we can protect those again that are not vaccinated and also vulnerable populations.”
