(Gettysburg) — More than 3,000 elephants will be on the move from Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum near Gettysburg to Wisconsin on Tuesday.
No, this won’t be a stampede similar to pre-civilization times. Instead, the mammals will be available to hold and view as paper and plastic. Elephants on pictures, posters and lamps. Elephants as children’s toys and hand-painted crafts.
Elephants large and small will begin the journey to their temporary home at the Al Ringling Mansion in Baraboo, Wisconsin, said Nicole Bucher, owner of Mister’s Ed’s.
In 2010, Mister Ed’s received a surplus of donations after a fire destroyed more than 2,000 elephant artifacts, she said. Instead of having the excess sit in storage, Mister Ed’s decided to loan them to the mansion. The mansion is a museum and events center originally owned by Albert Ringling, a founder of the Ringling Circus.
The mansion is now owned by York native Joe Colossa, Bucher said. Colossa was not immediately available for comment.
There is no timeframe for the loan, Bucher said.
