Doctors-in-training get started at midstate hospitals

(Lancaster) — You may see some new faces in hospitals and clinics across the midstate, as medical students typically start their on-the-job training around this time.

13 residents are already working at Lancaster General Health, rotating between hospital departments.

They practice at both Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster City, and a rural clinic in Quarryville that serves the Amish community, among others.

Family Medical Residency Director Steve Ratcliffe says the residents come from all parts of the U.S. including the University of Vermont, Oregon Health and Science University, and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City.

“So we really enjoy that mixture of these young professionals that come to Lancaster to train,” says Ratcliffe.

The program runs three years at Lancaster General.

Residents often work stressful overnight shifts that can run longer than 12 hours.

Some medical schools and health systems have started to consider cutting back on the grueling training, because evidence has emerged it can be harmful.
