(Philadelphia) — As Philadelphia braces for one of the biggest events in its history this September, city officials are making plans to help everyone get around.
The World Gathering of Families is scheduled to happen in Philadelphia September 22nd through the 25th, followed by a visit from Pope Francis the weekend of the 26th and 27th.
The events are expected to draw a million-and-a-half or more people to Philadelphia – possibly more than already live there – and transit isn’t exactly a treat on any given normal day. SEPTA General Manager Joe Casey says the transit agency will operate as normal during the week, but modifications take effect for the weekend papal visit. “Only 31 of our system-wide 280 rail stations will be open for service. This will allow us to speed up service and recycle the trains to increase our system capacity.”
Casey said information will be updated as plans evolve.
