Pigs Partner with the State

(Harrisburg) — A Central Pennsylvania swine farm is benefiting from a partnership by the PA Agriculture Department and Department of Community and Economic Development.

The state has secured a 200-thousand-dollar, low-interest loan for the Snyder County farm to begin supplying pork products to Montgomery County-based Hatfield Quality Meats. Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding says this is one way for agriculture to serve as a natural resource as well as an economic resource.

He said there is the need for open land and open space and farmland preservation, and the stewardship of the land, but we also have to have economic activity.  Redding said this is a business and there has to be a way to make that connection.

Redding believes it’s an example of how government can benefit business as well as private operations in Pennsylvania.
