Smart Talk: PA population trends; Moving PA presidential primary; Plein Air Camp Hill Arts Fest

What to look for on Smart  Talk Friday, May 29, 2015:

Twenty-eight states will hold their presidential primaries or caucuses before Pennsylvania’s primary in 2016.  Currently, the Pennsylvania primary is scheduled for April 26, 2016.

Would moving the state’s primary to an earlier date give Pennsylvania voters more say in who the Republican and Democratic nominees are next year?

Republican State Rep. Keith Greiner of Lancaster County thinks so.

Greiner is proposing legislation that would move the Pennsylvania primary to the third week in March, 2016.

Greiner says that as it now stands, the nominees will have been selected before Pennsylvania voters go to the polls and in effect the late date disenfranchises the state’s voters.

The argument against Greiner’s bill is that too manhy other candidates are impacted by any move, especially state legislative candidates who would have to circulate nominating petitions sooner.

Also, Pennsylvanians are slowly moving back toward cities after decades of dispersion and clustering in new, smaller population centers.  Do we know why?  Is it due to the price of fuel or does technology play a role?  Or maybe there’s not one explanation.

Finally, there are several arts festivals throughout the Central Pennsylvania region this spring and summer.  One of the most unique will be held in Camp Hill, Cumberland County this weekend.  It is the fifth annual Plein Air Camp Hill Arts Festival.
