(Harrisburg) — A statue honoring the late Joe Paterno remains in storage, but a midstate lawmaker wants to rename a state bridge with the former Penn State coach’s name.

Republican Mike Regan is circulating a memo asking for cosponsors for a bill to add Paterno’s name to the Turnpike bridge over the Susquehanna River between Dauphin and York counties.

Regan’s bill could create more controversy, as Paterno’s legacy is mixed.

He collected a record 409 wins for Penn State’s football program, but a disputed report from former FBI director Louis Freeh says Paterno was complicit in keeping key facts from authorities about the Jerry Sandusky child abuse scandal.
