Drought watch extended for 5 midstate counties

Water faucet sink

(Harrisburg) — The state Department of Environmental Protection is keeping five midstate counties under a drought watch.

Acting DEP Secretary John Quigley says a dry fall and below-average winter is prompting the decision that affects Berks, Northumberland, Schuylkill, Snyder and Union counties.

The department is asking residents of the counties to conserve water use.

It offers recommendations like running the water only when needed, using a broom to clean driveways and sidewalks, and mulching around shrubs and garden plants.

A drought watch is the least severe classification in the state.
