Midstate one of the worst areas for air quality in the nation
(Harrisburg) — A recent report finds people in the midstate are breathing some of the worst air in the country.
The American Lung Association’s State of the Air report ranks the Harrisburg – York – Lebanon metro area as the 12th worst in the U.S. for year-round fine particle pollution.
The data is based on readings from 2011 to 2013, and the metro area is one of the few in the east where air quality has gotten worse.
Particle pollution is linked to premature deaths, asthma attacks and heart attacks, plus lung cancer.
The one bright spot in the report came on high ozone days — fewer were measured compared to past reports.
