Penn State setting up agricultural research center in Ukraine
(State College) — Penn State is setting up a research center halfway around the world.
The Center for Agricultural Technologies will work with a nonprofit in Ukraine on the collaboration.
Deanna Behring is with the College of Agricultural Sciences at Penn State, and says with eastern Ukraine in a shaky situation, this is especially important.
“We’re saying, ‘No. At this time, Ukraine needs its friends and partners more than ever,’ and we’re here for our partner and our friend,” says Behring.
Behring says a family that came to Pennsylvania after the Soviet Union broke up is helping to pay for the research center.
“If you go to several universities in Ukraine, you will see Penn State banners and photographs on the walls of many of the university’s presidents,” she adds.
Once it’s set up, grants will be awarded to Ukranian researchers on a competitive basis.
