York City School’s chief recovery officer impressed with board reports Monday night

(York) — Carol Saylor, the York City School District’s new chief recovery officer, attended her first school board committee meeting Monday night and said she was impressed. 

District officials gave presentations about conferences they attended as well as progress reports from the schools. Plans include restructuring the high school.

“I couldn’t help but think anyone sitting through that meeting and hearing the reports from the schools had to be impressed with all of the things that going on,” she said after the meeting. “The thing that continues to impress me is the community support. Each of those buildings had page after page of the number of community organizations are active and supportive of their schools. That’s tremendous.

“There are a lot of really, really good things going on already,” she said.

Gov. Tom Wolf announced Saylor’s appointment as the city’s new chief recovery officer last week. She replaces David Meckley, who resigned on March 13, citing the governor’s opposition to turning the district’s schools into charters.

A blueprint of the revised plan will be presented fairly soon, Saylor said. It will be shared with everybody to get feedback before the revised plan is finalized.

She wrote down a quote that was presented during one of the power point presentations Monday night: “How can we restructure schools to do better for kids, instead of how can we get kids to do better?”

“I just thought that was a really powerful way of talking about restructuring,” she said.

Saylor said she thinks the plan has to reflect another quote that was made Monday night: “One team, one goal.”
