Phil and others vote for more winter, but one in the midstate bucks the trend

Punxsutawney Phil stuck a dagger in the hearts of those hoping for news of a quickly arriving spring.

(Punxsutawney) — As the midstate cleans up from a wintry mess, the state’s most famous groundhog sees another six weeks of winter.

Members of the Inner Circle at the ceremony in Punxsutawney had attendees take the world’s largest selfie with Phil, one wore a GoPro camera on his top hat, and the group sang a song about Phil set to the tune of Pharrell’s Happy.

Then, the big announcement came.

“Yes, a shadow I see. You can start to twitter, hashtag six more weeks of winter,” said one of the members of the Inner Ciricle.

Phil wasn’t the only groundhog bringing doom and gloom: York’s Poor Richard and JT Towney in Lebanon County’s Jonestown also predicted six more weeks of winter.

Octorora Orphie in Colerain Township, Lancaster County, did not see his shadow.

Groundhog Day is celebrated every year on February 2nd, and dates back to the 1700’s.

30 years of data recently compiled by the Washington Post indicates Phil can be accurate in some areas, but rarely in the northeast.
