(Harrisburg) — Ridership on both Amtrak lines in Pennsylvania finished up in fiscal year 2014 compared to the previous year.

The Keystone line, which runs between Harrisburg, Philadelphia and New York, saw about a three percent improvement. ThePennsylvanian, which travels from New York to Pittsburgh, rose close to six percent.

PennDOT’s work with Amtrak makes a difference, says Amtrak’s Craig Schultz.

“We’ve been working very closely with them to improve the infrastructure and really increase speeds on the Keystone Service going back several years,” he says.

Schultz expects future increases as well, thanks to a rising millenial generation that more strongly favors public transportation.

“We think that the demographics really line up, and we feel good about the service we provide and the value that our passengers place on it,” adds Schultz.
