(Harrisburg) — Pennsylvania’s senior US Senator is teaming up with a midstate congressman to propose an overhaul of the federal program helping miners with black lung disease.

Democratic Senator Bob Casey and Congressman Matt Cartwright, who represents Schulykill County in the midstate, introduced the legislation along with a number of other members of their party.

They say the changes will help miners get access to unbiased medical exams and representation in the event of an appeal.

The proposal comes on the heels of news reports exposing questionable diagnoses by doctors paid by coal companies.
