Bill provides state help if disaster hits municipality

(Harrisburg) — Municipal governments would get state money for repairs after a disaster, under a proposal in the state Senate.

The program would only cover losses not reimbursed by insurance, and funding would be limited to $3 million in the first year.

Republican Senator Lisa Baker of Luzerne County says for small municipalities, a flash flood or particularly strong storm can wipe out the budget.

“If a township, borough, or authority is the victim of a localized disaster, losses can be devastating, whether they affect 10 families or 10,000,” she says.

Municipalities could use the money to rebuild or repair its buildings, roads, parks, sewer systems, and other infrastructure.

The bill originally covered losses by residents as well, but that was stripped by the Senate.
