Handful of license plate fees rising July 1
(Harrisburg) — More PennDOT fees are going up July 1 as part of thetransportation funding bill, butthe hikes won’t affect as many people as the increases did in April.
The one-time fee for vanity, or personalized, license plates will nearly quadruple, from $20 to $76, the steepest increase of any fee changing July 1.The cost hadn’t changed since the 1960’s. Replacement license plates will also cost more, along with the price for an inspection sticker.
Two months ago, the cost for ID cards and driver’s licenses more than doubled, along with the price for a certificate of title.
“Most of the fees that have been adjusted haven’t been changed since 1997. And what it represents is a real investment in our future. It was designed to increase public safety, drive commerce, create jobs, and it’s proving to do all that,” saysJan McKnight, spokesperson with PennDOT.
“These fee adjustments don’t affect the average motorist, they’re just a few changes, replacements, personalized plates and that sort of thing. But keep in mind, it’s for a larger good. It’s for the safer roads, working to put people to work and to really make our roads a safer place.”
Increased driver’s license and annual vehicle registration fees take effect next July.
There are about 288,469 vanity license plates in Pennsylvania.
The transportation funding bill, which some have criticized for increasing taxes and fees, is expected to lead to $2.3 billion in additional spending for roads and bridges by 2018.
