More farmland preserved, but long backlog remains

(Harrisburg) — Farms in four midstate counties will be preserved thanks to a state program.

They total more than 400 acres across Berks, Lancaster, Perry and York counties.

The Todd Cauffman Farm number One is the largest to be preserved in this round, at 131 acres.

But Doug Wolfgang, Director of the Bureau of Farmland Preservation with the state Agriculture Department, says there’s so much more to do…

“So even after we’ve preserved and protected 4,600 farms, it’s estimated that about 1,900 applicants remain on the backlog list in 57 counties across the Commonwealth that partner with us.”

26 farms in 14 counties statewide are being protected in the latest move by the program.

Lancaster County hit a milestone late last year, preserving 100,000 acres, more than any other county in the U-S.
