AAA says travel will increase, but not as much as nationally

(Harrisburg) — More Pennsylvanians will be traveling this Memorial Day weekend, but the increase here is expected to lag behind the national average.

AAA Mid Atlantic says it expects about a half percent increase in travel compared to last year, but nationally, it predicts a jump of more than a percent.

Compared to last year, gas prices are expected to be about the same during this holiday weekend, about $3.65 a gallon.

AAA spokesperson Jenny Robinson says a couple factors could contribute to the results, including increased travel by bus, plane and train.

“Sometimes there are really good deals you can get on a train or a bus trip. Maybe people’s cars are not in the best shape, we know that the average age of cars on the road is older. Cruises are very popular this year, we’ve had a lot of people booking cruises.”

Robinson says the Memorial Day travel numbers are still the highest seen in the state since the recession, but some are choosing something besides the road.

“Depending on people’s schedules, maybe it’s worth it to save the time, and not spend as much time on driving. We also have been seeing a big uptick over the past month, through the winter and then into the spring, with people booking overseas and faraway destinations.”

And she says that bodes well for summer travel.
