PennDOT delaying changes to the York Split

(Harrisburg) — Morning after morning, afternoon after afternoon, vehicles stack up at the York Split on Interstate 83 in Cumberland County.

“It’s been a bottleneck for as long as I can remember. If you’re entering the Harrisburg area from the South and 83, it just backs up for miles and miles in the morning. And then in the afternoon, we’re backed up across the South Bridge and into Harrisburg for several miles as well,” saysPennDOT’s Mike Crochunis.

Construction has been underway for months, but a change planned for this weekend is getting delayed.

Off ramps from I-83 to Highland Park and 581 to Lemoyne were scheduled to get re-aligned this weekend.

But, Crochunis says it’s been pushed back to the end of the month because of scheduling issues.

He says crews want to make sure an overhead sign truss gets up before making the permanent change, so drivers know exactly where to go.

“All these ramp modifications are being made to eliminate the conflicts associated with the current short weaving areas of entering and exiting traffic. We hope that it will allow for smoother travel through the area.”

More shifts are planned over the summer, including an on-ramp change, and Crochunis says by the end of the year, the York Split should be in its final configuration.

The project is costing $22.1 million.
