STFriday: union dues, polls, chocolate… and a groundhog

What to look for on Smart Talk Friday:

Bills in both chambers of the General Assembly would end the automatic deduction of union dues and voluntary political contributions from the pay of public employees in Pennsylvania.

Organized labor is gearing up to fight, claiming it’s a union-busting plan designed to shrink their political spending.

We’ll hear from AFSCME Council 13 Executive Director David Fillman and the House bill’s prime sponsor, Representative Bryan Cutler. The Lancaster County Republican says he’s not refuting the rights of public employee unions to make contributions to political campaigns and political action committees — but he does not believe the government should be collecting political money.

Then we’ll discuss the latest Franklin and Marshall College Poll with Poll Director Terry Madonna.

Later, we’ll take you inside a brand new exhibit at The Hershey Story Museum. The interactive displays provide visitors the opportunity to find out what it was like to work inside Milton Hershey’s original chocolate factory at 19 East Chocolate Ave. in Hershey.

Before the hour is over, we’ll also hear from one of the members of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s Inner Circle. Bob Roberts, Punxsutawney Phil’s protector, will give us the inside scoop on this Sunday’s festivities.

It’s early spring or bust this Groundhog Day.
