(Arlington, VA) — Tech toys are hot this holiday season. PBS Kids surveyed parents of children ages two to 10 and found more than half are planning to gift technology this year.

Lesli Rotenberg, general manager of Children’s Programming at PBS, says tablets top the list.

“We also know that tablets can be great educational tools for kids, but it really depends on the content. It’s all about what you put on it,” she says.

“So it’s a great tool if you put the right content on it, if the content is truly educational.”

Rotenberg says to check for recommended ages, and to avoid apps that target kids with advertisements. She notes plenty of free and low-cost educational apps are available.

Rotenberg also recommends parents have a plan to limits screen time before any high-tech gifts are unwrapped.
